Quart is sent to investigate the sinister theft of the Caravaca Cross in a church where all those who occupied it —officers and parishioners— have vanished and one of those attending the mass dies as a result of cardiac arrest. But Quart's mission is also to closely follow the machinations of the no less sinister Monsignor Aguirre, belonging to a kind of sect within the Church itself that wishes to recover its splendor in the Middle Ages: "Iter ad Deum".
