Sr. Lt. Yuri Kozyrev, who served in the front-line reconnaissance is taken prisoner during the last few days of the 2nd World War. After the war ends, the Soviet authorities sentence him to life imprisonment, however, when his case is finally reopened, he is released and fully acquitted. Yuri returns to his home in a small workers' town in Moscow, to find that everything has changed during his absence. His father went missing during the war, his mother has died and his sweetheart Larissa has married Volynsky, a successful salesman. Yuri finds a job as a security guard in a warehouse, however, one day when the warehouse is broken into, Yuri becomes the chief suspect. He manages to avoid arrest and decides to find out who is responsible for the robbery. When he successfully catches the criminal, Yuri is rewarded by the KGB Head, Lavrentiy Beria himself, who appoints him Crime Investigation Department Inspector. While this prestigious position brings Yuri new cases, it also brings him face to face with dangerous criminals, colleagues, ex-comrades and his past.
