- Spencer MB15 de setembro de 2025I can see why a lot of people like "Edgerunners," I just felt mixed about it. Somehow this felt too short and too long but in regard to different plot elements. And a lot of people can't notice that Trigger didn't have a good budget for it seeing as a majority of each episode are usually still frames or only one speaking character's lips are visible while everyone else's are hidden to save time/money (i.e. the Animals firing that rocket on the highway in E01 that took 3 years to hit its target). Though they definitely put the budget where it needed to be for the action. I just hope CDPR gives them more time & money for Season 2. I watched both the English dub (great cast btw) and the Japanese dub second, I liked the subbed version more. While most of the English VAs do a solid job, there's quite a few that gave me "anime voice actor" for 90% of their performances and didn't feel natural or right for their characters. Giancarlo Esposito was great though he felt kinda restrained at times. I honestly think this needed at least 2 more episodes or 2 fewer so they can focus more on David's arc and really drive it home. A lot of the conversations between characters that aren't directly related to the plot focus strictly on exposition. Now, that's kind of a necessary evil of big sci-fi stories but sometimes they were just explained naturally through the story anyways. Most of the characters arcs are just "Exist, then die." Emotionally, this kinda worked for me? But not really? Before watching this the first time, I decided to play through the entirety of 2077 again with its fresh v1.6 "Edgerunners" update and I feel like the game's narrative conveys the tragedy of living in this miserable world better than "Edgerunners" does and I connected more to the game's cast than the "Edgerunners" cast. That could be because you spend more time with them than "Edgerunners" but I say the anime should have the leg up seeing as it is 100% narrative. In the game, you only get glimpses into the lives of River, Kerry, Judy, Panam, etc. inbetween dropping Tyger Claws on the corner. While the anime is focused entirely on these archetypes of people. Some of them genuinely should have been cut from the show to focus more on the truly essential characters (I'm looking at you, Rebecca's brother whose name I can't remember rn cuz that is how little you matter). Episode 6 is when everything started clicking for me. Maine's arc fed into David's arc in a amazing way that moved me. Then there's like 2 epsiodes of "meh" before hitting the final 2 episodes where the series proves itself. If I could give the show a rating for those three episodes, it would 5/5 no doubt. But for me, there's a lot of weaker elements in those three chained to the lesser episodes so I can't give it a higher rating. I also just don't like "I Really Want To Stay At Your House" all that much. I get what it means but much like a lot of the 2077 OST, it's just a throwaway song that got slapped onto the game (like 90% of the radio music) because Rosa wasn't going to release it otherwise and I can tell. After my first watch, I did listen to it quite a bit because of the show's emotional weight but something about didn't feel right. It's cool that a pop song can utilize a melody that evokes both joy and sadness like it does, especially combined with the lyrics. For me, I felt the production and singing to be lacking. Something about how it was produced and mixed just irks me. Then again, it IS music, subjective 'n' all that. There's also the music video for the outro song "Let You Down" that is the canon prequel to the show and explains why Maine is hesitant to bring in David. It's dope. I think the art-style shoulda been what they used for the main series. I also thought that the Arasaka Cyberskeleton/linear frame looked dumb and functionally cartoon-y. I love Trigger but I was hoping this would stay relatively lore-friendly. And I'm sure "Cyberpunk 2078" (or whatever it'll be called) will reference both "Edgerunners." My wife hasn't seen this yet (she doesn't really want to) so I'll probably watch this again and refresh my memory seeing as I haven't seen it since 2023.
