It was disco sci-fi with laser guns, jumpsuits and a robot named Twiki who said “biddi-biddi.” Buck Rogers, frozen in space for 500 years, wakes up in a post-nuclear Earth and immediately starts flirting, fighting and flying starships. It was campy, colorful and absolutely of its time. The sets were shiny, the costumes were tight and the dialogue was pure pulp. But it had charm. Gil Gerard played Buck with swagger and Erin Gray as Colonel Wilma Deering was the reason half the audience tuned in. Season 1 mixed space battles with political intrigue and every episode felt like a comic book come to life. Too bad they went the way they did in Season 2, ditched the Earth setting, added Hawk and tried to go philosophical with a wandering starship. The tone shifted, the cast thinned and the magic fizzled. Could it still be made today like that? Not a chance. The disco sheen, the earnest pulp, the unapologetic camp, it’s a relic of its time. But that’s what makes it special.
- pipanni7 de setembro de 2025So I watched this tv show for nostalgia, because I loved it as a kid, but it has definitely not aged well. The props and costumes are ridiculous, the dialogues and stories even worse. On the positive side the lead character has charisma and the ladies are quite lovely. Two stars for nostalgia only, because I should actually give it a lower rating.
