The young man mistreated by all the adults around him finds friendship with a creature most of us abhor and despise. Beauty and the Beast tales have nothing on Willard. Alienation and loneliness find companionship with a "monster". Brilliantly metaphorical movie, the metaphor presented so simply that most critics miss the whole point of the movie and babble literal nonsense about it. The young Bruce Davison is scintillating in the role, creating emotional nuance and ambiguity and a promise of what he's capable of in complex character roles. Loved rediscovering the movie here.
