Cate Blanchett always acts her ass off and TAR is no different. Even when the film got a bit boring and felt it wasn’t going anywhere, Blanchett was always electrifying. The film actually gets more interesting as it goes along. The last 40 mins or so get really crazy.

The poster for this movie should just be Cate Blanchett slam-dunking an Oscar.

I love a great movie that makes me feel low-class, poor, and stupid. Like watching a pre-2000s Dennis Miller standup special because I had no idea what the hell they were talking about, but I still enjoyed it. Could have been trimmed down a bit, but the length is also part of the appeal. Also, going in blind, I thought it was based on a true story, and it was embarrassing realizing halfway through that it wasn't.

My quick rating - 6.5/10. This Oscar nominee is one that I know very little about. I did catch Cate Blanchett on the Colbert Show during her press tour and got a quick rundown of the basic story, but before that, I knew nothing about the fictional composer. This flick explores the complexities of the international world of Western classical music, with a focus on the life and work of the fictional composer Lydia Tár. The film features a talented cast, including Cate Blanchett, who gives a compelling performance as the lead character, and my choice for this year's acting Oscar for a female. Despite the strong performances, the film's slow pace and long, drawn-out scenes may be a turn-off for some viewers. The story takes its time to unfold, and there are moments where it feels like not much is happening on screen. There was literally an hour between the first great scene with Blanchett showing the lengths her character will go to beat someone down emotionally, until the next scene that had any impact on the story. However, for those with an interest in classical music and the world of orchestra conductors, Tar is an intriguing exploration of a unique and often overlooked facet of the music industry. The film's attention to detail in its portrayal of the classical music scene is commendable, and it offers a rare glimpse into the high-stakes world of orchestral performance. Unfortunately, all of that does take a back seat to her character's egocentric nature and constant need to be in control in scene after scene that are pieced together. I just think that the general audience will be turned off by the extremely slow pace, and the exceptional performance by Blanchett isn't going to be quite enough to satisfy.

Cate Blanchett is incredible. Period. Full stop. Really loved this. Initially this felt like an examination of so many things: cancel culture, the corruptive nature of power, hierarchy and privilege….and much, much more. Yet, in the end I had the feeling that these topics aren’t really argued to conclusion, rather they’re presented here, like a prompt to a 10 page essay. And we, the audience, are intended to scrawl out some truths from this nuanced case study of Lydia Tár. There is so much in here that begs for conversation after the credits roll that this one will surely be sticking with me for a while. And seriously, Cate Blanchett is absolutely incredible from the opening moments to the final scene…..and every frame in between. Plus, there are many little details to be picked up on when watching it a second time. Masterful filmmaking and stunning performance from Cate.
