A fun quirky film that clearly has its own voice and is super original. Tilda Swinton is bat shit crazy in all the best ways and gives an amazing performance!

I kind of loved this. Most of the stars are for the way Tilda Swinton talks to chatbots and the other ways she interacts with technology. She’s absolutely delightful in this as a pretentious artworld Karen that’s stringing along Alejandro (Julio Torres) who’s work Visa has expired and he desperately needs Elizabeth (Swinton) to sponsor him or else he’ll be deported back to El Salvador. An absurdist send up of the circular logic and pitfalls of the US immigration system, I found it to be surprisingly funny.

A quirky movie with unique characters and many enjoyable moments. I’m a big fan of Tilda Swinton and it’s always a delight to see her absolutely nail every role she gets, in this instance making us wince at her narcissistic impulses to belittle every single object and person in her vicinity while also surprisingly making us appreciate her tenacity. Elizabeth reminds me of the Nietzschean concept of the Will to Power. Alejandro’s character and the actor who played him were really cool, playing well with the humour elements and showing a more quiet introverted version of resilience and passion. Most movies tend to show two characters with differing personalities having progressively bigger effects on each other but here we see that even by the end the characters mostly stay the same yet the small effects they have on each other have a profound impact. They used humour really well to explore the immigrant struggle, gig economy, predatory banks, legacy and continuity, the struggle to maintain a satisfying life while trying to make ends meet and the solace and strength you gain from engaging with art and creative endeavours. The opening intro was very pleasing and also I really liked the egg art pieces. Overall it was a nice entertaining watch and I would love to see Tilda Swinton in more A24 films.
