Em Nova York uma epidemia disseminada por baratas mata cerca de mil crianças, sendo que nada consegue erradicar a doença. Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino), uma cientista que recebe a ajuda do marido, cria a "Geração Judas", uma mutação genética que, se colocada junto a outras baratas, elimina a praga. Após 3 anos Susan constata que as baratas modificadas, que deveriam durar apenas uma geração, continuam a reproduzir-se, são do tamanho de um ser humano e tornaram-se basicamente carnívoras. Assim, acompanhada de um pequeno grupo, ela desce aos subterrâneos da cidade e tenta deter os gigantescos insetos, antes que criem colónias por toda a metrópole.

It’s a smart exploration of urban legends and biological evolution. Top-Tier SFX: Before the industry went "all-in" on questionable early CGI, Mimic utilized incredible practical effects and animatronics. The "Judas Breed" insects have a tactile, gooey weight to them that still looks terrifying today. Creepy Atmosphere: Del Toro turns the New York City subway system into a gothic labyrinth. It’s claustrophobic, dripping with moisture, and perpetually shrouded in shadows—perfect for a movie about things hiding in plain sight. A "Not-Nonsense" Script: Unlike many slashers of the era, the characters here act with a modicum of intelligence. The internal logic of how the insects mimic human form—using wing cases to look like trench coats—is a brilliant, grounded take on biology. Typical 90s Energy: It hits that nostalgic sweet spot with its gritty color palette, "science gone wrong" anxiety, and a solid cast featuring Mira Sorvino and Josh Brolin. It’s the peak of the 90s creature-feature boom.

Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic delivered exactly that: a grimy, atmospheric horror flick where science tries to fix a problem and accidentally creates a monster that mimics its way into Manhattan’s underbelly. Mira Sorvino plays Susan Tyler, an entomologist who genetically engineers a bug to wipe out disease carrying cockroaches. It’s supposed to die off after one generation, but of course, it doesn’t. Instead, it evolves, grows, and starts mimicking humans. Cue the claustrophobic tunnels, skittering sounds and a creature design that still holds up as pure nightmare fuel. Watching it on VHS added to the mood, grainy visuals, muffled audio and that analog tension you don’t get from HD. It felt dirty, dangerous and weirdly real. The cast is solid: Jeremy Northam, Giancarlo Giannini, Charles S. Dutton and even a young Josh Brolin. The pacing builds slowly, then dives headfirst into insectoid terror. It’s not perfect, some moments feel borrowed from Alien and The Fly, but del Toro’s fingerprints are all over it: underground lairs, guilt-ridden scientists and monsters born from human arrogance. And for a VHS rental? It was a gem. Mimic is grimy, eerie and full of skittering dread. I rented it, I rewound it and I still remember the sound of those wings. Into the Plex library it goes, a VHS-born horror that earned its spot.
