In fact, none of the characters in the film are particularly likable or good. The film's realistic depiction of violence is further intensified by its dark, atmospheric setting, drawing the audience into the film's world and enhancing its overall impact.

Michael Caine is an absolute evil bastard in this, and he's surrounded by a menagerie of low life scum. It's an unrelenting film, that wears it's humour jet black. And such a downbeat, bleak ending. What a great movie, an absolute classic.
