“Evolution” is still one of my all-time comfort movies. Rewatching it now, I think what makes it endure isn’t just the jokes or the creature effects, but how loose and human the whole thing feels. The cast chemistry carries everything. Orlando Jones in particular is operating on a completely different comedic frequency and somehow never breaks the movie. Duchovny’s dry delivery balances the chaos perfectly, and Seann William Scott brings this oddly sincere puppy-energy to Wayne that keeps the character likable instead of annoying. It’s also one of those rare studio comedies that genuinely feels like people were having fun making it. The film never pretends to be smarter than it is. It just keeps escalating — worms, dragons, monkeys, exploding malls, weaponized shampoo — and commits fully to every ridiculous turn. A very specific kind of early-2000s sci-fi comedy that Hollywood barely makes anymore.

I’m glad they put so much effort into the CGI and SFX and paid good actors for this unfunny, cringey, really bad Head & Shoulders ad.

Great early 2000's sci-fi fun about a meteor that hits earth and releases single-cell life that starts to evolve rapidly into multicellular organisms. Orlando Jones is hysterical in this role. David Duchovny is always entertaining and Julianne Moore is her gorgeous self. Fun, entertaining, good movie. Worth repeat watches.

A great little gem of a movie.

Fox Mulder teaming up with Stifler and Earl Hickey’s brother to deal with aliens? That alone sounds like a fever dream in the best way. It’s not exactly polished or smart, but it knows what it is and just runs with it. The cast really carries it—David Duchovny keeps things grounded with that dry delivery, while Seann William Scott brings pure chaotic energy, and Ethan Suplee fits right into the dynamic. There’s a fun, slightly chaotic chemistry between them that makes even the weaker moments easier to sit through. It gets a lot of credit for not taking itself seriously, throwing in some creative ideas and a few genuinely funny bits. But it’s also pretty uneven—jokes don’t always land, the pacing wobbles, and the whole thing can feel a bit all over the place at times.

This is one of my guilty pleasures from high school. Extremely goofy and highly quotable. Plain good fun.

Definitely a sitting around with your buds, playing in the background movie...There are some great parts that everyone quiets down for...'Can you save his legs Doc? He thinks he's an athlete' among lots of others. If you've never seen it, some of the lines are classics!

Ivan Reitman tried to bottle the Ghostbusters formula again, oddball scientists, government interference and gooey alien chaos, but this time with shampoo jokes and Julianne Moore doing slapstick. David Duchovny and Orlando Jones lead the charge as college professors who stumble onto a meteorite that’s evolving life at breakneck speed. Cue the military, the one-liners and a climax that involves Head & Shoulders as a biological weapon. Seann William Scott plays the same guy he always played back then and the creature effects range from “pretty cool” to “PlayStation 2 cutscene.” The plot barely holds together, but the cast commits and the tone never takes itself seriously. It’s the kind of film you watch with snacks, laugh at the dumb parts and quote for years. Evolution is a guilty pleasure wrapped in early 2000s cheese. I rented it, I laughed and I still remember the Head & Shoulders scene like it was gospel and there is always time for lubricant.

Cheesy Sci-Fi comedy with a few good scenes but it's hard to watch all the way through.
