Cop is a gritty, tightly wound thriller elevated almost entirely by James Woods’ fierce, magnetic performance. As a jaded and obsessive LAPD detective, Woods brings an intensity that never wavers—raw, volatile, and completely compelling. The film leans into a dark, moody atmosphere, blending violence, tension, and flashes of sharp humour that cut through the bleakness just enough to keep the tone dynamic. Even in quieter moments, such as scenes with his daughter, he can’t help but share his hardened worldview, believing he’s preparing her for the harsh realities he sees every day. It’s a small but telling detail that deepens the character and underscores how consumed he is by his work. Woods’ presence carries the film from its opening scenes all the way to its unflinching climax, giving the story a sense of urgency it might otherwise lack.
