This movie was really fun. At the end of it I was hoping for a second one. But then I realized its 10 years old.

Michael Keaton and Shiva Negar walk away with the movie, which is awkward for a film supposedly built around Dylan O’Brien’s revenge-bot hero and Taylor Kitsch’s villain. This had the bones of a real spy thriller, and with its bigger budget and glossy set pieces it clearly is not one of those duct-taped Scott Adkins side quests, which only makes the missed opportunity more annoying. Mitch Rapp is basically Jason Bourne with an axe to grind and the impulse control of a lit firecracker: all loose-cannon swagger, no patience, forever disobeying orders because apparently “training” just means sprinting toward explosions. The problem is that once it stops being a spy movie and starts lunging toward generic action spectacle, the plot becomes painfully predictable and the whole thing loses the one thing it needed most: intrigue. Keaton does grizzled-pro mentor work like a man cashing checks with dignity, Negar brings more presence than the script deserves, and the rest of the movie keeps mistaking noise for suspense. Perfectly watchable, mildly dumb, and much less clever than its expensive haircut suggests. Critics weren’t far off this lane either, often calling it generic, predictable, and a missed opportunity despite some solid action and Keaton’s presence.

This film is a decent little spy thriller. It never quite rises to greatness, but it remains watchable. The cast does most of the heavy lifting. Dylan O'Brien brings enough intensity to sell the transformation from civilian to operative, Michael Keaton adds gravitas as the hardened mentor, and Taylor Kitsch plays a suitably volatile antagonist. None of the performances are weak, and that helps stabilize the film even when the material wobbles. The premise is a little far fetched, but the film handles it with reasonable discipline. The action sequences are grounded and mostly plausible, avoiding the superhero excess that often creeps into modern spy films. Fights feel physical, stakes feel tangible, and the direction keeps things moving without becoming chaotic. Still, parts of the film feel overly neat. Character motivations snap into place too conveniently, and the escalation unfolds with a sense of mechanical inevitability. Nothing is terrible, yet things never quite gel. It has the feel of a smaller production trying to echo a bigger franchise, competent but slightly derivative, like a scaled down version of a more ambitious spy thriller. The script also leans heavily on topical elements such as nuclear brinkmanship, terrorism, and media manipulation. These are clearly meant to make the story feel urgent and contemporary, but they're merely incorporated rather than explored. The result is a film that gestures at relevance without really doing much with it. In the end, it's solid but unremarkable. Good acting, decent direction, competent action, and a serviceable plot. It works, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression, apart from simply "meh".
