The Winds of War is a sweeping 1983 TV miniseries that beautifully paved the way for its sister series, War & Remembrance, with both rightly earning critical acclaim. Adapted from Herman Wouk’s novel, it focuses on the tense prewar era and the slow build-up to World War II—a period that’s rarely captured on film, much less television. For years, ambitious history programs like this struggled to find the same impact on TV, at least until more recent successes such as Vikings or The Last Kingdom revived interest in big, character-driven historical epics. Mitchum brings a weary authority to Victor “Pug” Henry, and the ensemble around him feels lived-in rather than showy. The attention to ships, uniforms, and diplomatic interiors gives the production a convincing, almost documentary texture. Instead of racing to the battlefield, the series lingers on choices, mistakes, and missed chances, making The Winds of War a richly absorbing portrait of a world sliding toward disaster.
