King wrote the screenplay and picked the director, as well as executive-produced. This version takes its time to set up characters and backstories of not just our family, but the story of the overlook and its inhabitants. It's told in 3 sections, (arrival, possession, escape) each getting 90 minutes, and there's so much more as far as details and various dangers that are left out of Kubrick's version. Especially the addiction to alcohol and its effects on Jack's mental state (King was fighting alcoholism while writing this book). I do however miss Nicholson's performance. He sold it, but overall, this is the better version if you're looking for the one that follows the book.
