- I’m currently 3 episodes into this series thoroughly enjoying the show so far. It is pretty dark but I feel like the story has really grabbed my attention. The cast is really good. Emmy Rossum is doing an excellent job as FBI agent Alice Black. Her character used to be a cop but went to the FBI after a relationship gone bad with another cop who abused her. You can feel her anguish and emotion while dealing with her ex and the trauma of her past. This all gets entwined with her search for a new serial killer on the loose. Her past police partner and sidekick on the show is played by actor Scoot Mcnairy another amazing actor from one of my favorite all time shows Halt and Catch Fire. The serial killer we find out was formerly sex trafficked and is now on the hunt for the men who abused her. While Alice is on the case she is dealing with stress and conflict from many different angles. You feel for her and honestly I don’t see how she can keep going forward like she is without some sort of breakdown coming. It is intense. Looking forward to catching new episodes as they come out!
- This isn't true life. But it's a reminder of how horrible true life can be. (From my journal, forgive & ignore the specifics, but I'm too lazy to edit it) I think I basically spent most of the rest of Saturday watching the TV show Furious, which I didn't intend to get so invested in (I was just 'checking it out')... I also managed to get Dad invested in it, in some ways possibly more so than myself. I was definitely more *emotionally* invested, but that's just who I am & how I am with anything. I was definitely fighting off a lot of tears - sometimes even successfully! - in that show. It may not be the greatest show of all time, but out of everything I've seen, I would go as far as saying it's the most 'confronting'. Anyway, Dad & I finished Furious on Sunday. It'll be interesting to see what they do with season 2. I personally think/am worried I won't like it anywhere near as much... as, in a lot of ways, the overall story itself was somewhat predictable... the main reason I liked it so much was how brutally it was able to beat me down emotionally. Like, I gave it 9 out of 10 on IMDB, right? But I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. Whereas I might recommend a très mediocre comedy or horror movie to someone I deemed the right audience (in this case, as a basic example, the comedy to my brother, & the horror to my sister or Mum, depending on the type). Did I think it was incredibly powerful? Yes. But with great power comes some tear-jerkingly great responsibility. I think if I'd been watching it on my own, there are multiple times I would have been an absolute wreck. Sitting less than 30cm away from Dad, instead I'd have a little sip of LA Ice Cola or water before surreptitiously wiping my eyes.
- Hulu brings us Emmy Rossum’s FBI agent Alice Black and Lola Petticrew’s Catherine Grace in the new crime thriller, Furious, The series focuses on two seriously damaged women who want revenge for the same thing that happened to them by the same people. However both want to achieve that goal in very opposite ways. Petticrew is particularly fantastic as Catherine, essentially a female Dexter with a much smaller kill list. Her targets are wealthy older men who preyed on young girls, including herself. She believes she’s delivering justice where the system failed. The problem is that once you start deciding who deserves to die, that moral high ground gets pretty damn slippery. Rossum’s Alice is the fascinating counterpoint. She wants to do the right thing, but her own traumatic past and increasingly questionable choices slowly drag her toward the same darkness Catherine has already embraced. That’s what makes Furious work. These women are more alike than either would probably admit, and their stories gradually reveal how deeply their pasts are intertwined. The series does a great job exploring the ugly space between wanting to do good and becoming comfortable doing terrible things. The cast is excellent, but Rossum and Petticrew absolutely carry the show. Their performances make Alice and Catherine complicated, sympathetic, disturbing, and occasionally downright terrifying. And now I desperately need Season 2 because the biggest question isn’t what will become of Catherine. It’s how far Alice will continue to fall now that she’s jumped into the abyss…
- Furious skillfully twists procedural conventions, focusing on the psychological weight of trauma over cheap shock value. Emmy Rossum grounds the series with a compelling, fractured portrayal of a scarred FBI agent, paired dynamically against Lola Petticrew’s eerie, calculated foil. While a few familiar detective tropes and midway lulls hold it back from perfection, it remains an entertaining thriller that handles its sensitive subject matter with care.
