Na primavera de 1985, a NBC cancelou a série, devido à baixa audiência. No entanto, Diff´rent Strokes recebeu uma suspensão da execução, com a ABC pegando a série para produzir uma 8º Temporada. No que acabou por ser a última temporada, Mary Ann Mobley substituiu Dixie Carter como a nova Maggie McKinney Drummond, a ABC exibiu o show nas noites de sexta-feira. A ABC cancelou a série após 19 episódios, e seu último episódio foi exibido em 7 de março. O show voltou à programação da ABC, em junho, para dois meses de reprises de verão, que terminou em 30 de agosto de 1986.
