The weird lighting is almost the first warning siren that something is off here, and unfortunately it is not just the goblins. Unwelcome starts with a decent folk-horror setup, but then it loses its nerve and mutates into a bargain-bin Gremlins detour, except not as funny, not as clever, and definitely not as charming. Even the director reportedly pitched it as “Gremlins meets Straw Dogs,” which at least explains why the movie feels like it is trying to juggle two completely different species of nonsense at once. Hannah John-Kamen does solid work and gets to be a proper badass, while Colm Meaney is reliable as ever, because Colm Meaney could probably add menace to a garden-center commercial. Douglas Booth, on the other hand, is stuck playing Jamie as such an overacted, irritating wimp that every scene with him feels like the movie is begging to be slapped awake. The rest of the cast mostly does not help. RogerEbert.com noted that the film’s mix of creepy and unintentionally hilarious is unstable, and that feels exactly right. The goblins are the real killer, and not in the way the movie intended. They look too silly to be scary, which means the film probably would have been stronger if it had shown less and suggested more. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus says the movie has tonal and pacing problems, and that is putting it politely. It keeps fumbling its folk-horror potential, the comedy barely lands, and the ending is so stupid it feels like the screenplay gave up and wandered into the woods.

My quick rating - 4.5/10. Another one marred by a stupid ending. All I could think of after it got rolling was a cross between Troll (1986) and Puppet Master. This horror flick is about a married couple, Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth), who move to rural Ireland to start a new life after being targeted by a home invasion back in the city. However, their peaceful existence is soon shattered when they discover malevolent goblins lurking in the ancient woods at the edge of their garden. The movie starts off promisingly enough, with the couple enjoying the beauty of their new surroundings and the peace and quiet of rural life. However, as they begin to explore the woods, strange and terrifying things start to happen. The little trolls are quite goofy, but their evil intentions are made clear early on. The movie does a good job of building tension as Maya and Jamie try to figure out what is going on and how to stop the creatures from wreaking havoc. I don't believe the makers of this one were sure on which way they wanted to lean between the horror and the comedy, by how some of the scenes led into one another. Colm Meaney definitely provided much-needed interest with his quirky, local character. Writer/director Jon Wright seemed very set on including the abducted homeowner narrative since it appears more than once. However, the movie is ultimately let down by a stupid and unsatisfying ending. Without giving too much away, it feels like Wright took the easy way out rather than coming up with a satisfying conclusion. Still an average horror movie that was just too confused with its own existence to be recommended, and prevents it from being a much more than something to pass the time.
