I'm a Stranger Things fan and I couldn't get into this. Eleven was way cooler than any of the quippy-dialogued female characters in this movie. It isn't a bad movie, it's just not really for adults, in my opinion...
- Shaydeknight19 de dezembro de 2025Odd Thomas feels like a lighter, superhero-adjacent cousin to ParaNorman or a more action-oriented variation on The Sixth Sense. It positions its protagonist as a gifted outsider who can see the dead and sense impending violence, but the film never quite settles into a tone that makes those elements come together properly. Having never read a Dean Koontz novel, I can't speak to the film's faithfulness to the source material. What does come across, however, is an apparent attempt to translate Koontz's literary dialogue style directly to the screen. The result is uneven at best. Much of the dialogue is stilted, emotionally flat, and oddly reminiscent of 1940s noir banter, only stripped of grit and charm, and replaced with glossy visuals and CGI. Occasionally it works, but more often it feels wooden and artificial. The voiceover is particularly problematic. While Anton Yelchin was quite a talented young actor whose early passing is genuinely tragic, the narration here is overly chipper, draining tension rather than enhancing it. It seems intended to capture the tone of the novel's internal monologue, but onscreen it becomes distracting and grating. From a technical standpoint, the film is competently made. Production values are high, the special effects are solid, and there are moments of genuine tension. The story itself is serviceable and occasionally engaging. Unfortunately, these strengths are undercut by inconsistent dialogue and character logic. Odd frequently behaves like a police officer (conducting investigations, inserting himself into dangerous situations) yet the film never adequately explains why he wouldn't simply pursue law enforcement if his goal is to stop bad people. Addressing his motivations is given seconds of screen time and why he does what he does remains frustratingly vague. Ultimately, Odd Thomas is less a horror film than an action-detective thriller with supernatural elements. It has the ingredients for something memorable, but they never fully gel. The end result is a film that is watchable, occasionally effective, but ultimately middle of the road.
