There are a dozen or so movies I’ve probably seen 100 times. This is 1. I’m gonna find the others now. Stay tuned.

Best opening action scene to any action movie. Whole movie is a banger through and through. Cool hero vs cool villain. Holds up.

⭐⭐⭐½ – Blade – Leather coats, vampires, and a whole lot of attitude. Before superheroes completely took over the cinema, Blade was out there proving that comic-book movies could be stylish, violent, and unapologetically cool. Watching it now, it's impossible not to notice the similarities in aesthetic to films like The Matrix. The black leather, the gothic atmosphere, the industrial soundtrack, and the dark urban setting all capture that late-90s mood perfectly. Whether intentional or not, it feels very much of that era, and honestly that's part of its charm. Wesley Snipes is the film's greatest strength. He brings a physical presence and confidence to Blade that makes the character instantly believable. Even when the plot is doing fairly predictable things, Snipes is compelling enough to keep the film moving forward. The story itself isn't especially complicated. You can generally see where things are heading long before they arrive, and some of the pacing feels a little lumbering by modern standards. Yet the film never becomes boring because it's constantly leaning on style, action, and atmosphere to keep you engaged. There are also flashes of genuinely interesting cinematography and editing scattered throughout. Not every creative choice lands, but enough do that the film develops an identity beyond simply being another action movie with vampires. What I appreciate most is that Blade feels willing to embrace its own weirdness. It's not trying to be grounded realism or prestige cinema. It's a comic-book vampire action film, and it knows it. Perhaps it isn't quite the masterpiece some remember, but it's still an entertaining ride and an important stepping stone for the superhero genre that followed. 🩸 A dark red cocktail served under neon lights — stylish, a little excessive, and unmistakably a product of its time.

The best and the only true Vampire movie that's not cringe and lame, Wesley Snipes was great in this. Loved it as a kid, and everytime I come back to it to watch it again I always enjoy it. Also has one of the best opening scenes of any movie, and for many of us was the gateway to the rave scene that we grew up with in 2000's.

only blade can make woosh sound effects work as well as they do, I don't make the rules

Channelling the same goth vibe as The Matrix, which came out a year later, Blade remains an entertaining albeit lumbering and predictable action flick. There are flashes of interesting cinematography and editing, but it is more fin than fin de siecle.

Blade came out in 1998 at the time comic book movies were going down the drain with the Batman movies, Spawn, and other properties not doing well with critics and audiences. Many did not realize Blade was a comic-book with no Marvel logo and Stan Lee's name appearing briefly at the opening credits. I would say that the films biggest strength is Wesley Snipes as Blade, he manages to be calm and reserve for the most part with some scenes showing more emotion when the film demands it. The rest of the cast which include Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, Stephen Dorff as Frost, and N'Bushe Wright ad Karen all do fine in their roles. I will say if your someone who lets say grew up with this film and your re-watching it, don't be surprised if the film hasn't aged with grace. That said i kinda liked the late 1990s style which gave the film its own identity, the only issue it at times the movie feels like a music video due to its use of fast forwarding and some editing. Stephen Norrington doesn't do a bad job as the director and its a shame that his career was ruined with that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film, but he could of eased up on the odd directing choices i mentioned. Also some of the CGI is pretty bad by modern standards (but for the late 1990s it was passable). So in all i do enjoy Blade and in spite of its problems, it is my favorite of the trilogy mostly due to the last third. Not that the first 2/3 were bad, but the last third had some plot twists i didn't expect and some fun action scenes along with a death of a main character (granted its undone by the next film but it was still a good scene). So i recommend you give Blade a watch.

There is a reason why this started all of the Marvel movies on a great run. Snipes at his prime and may still be to this day showing up in the latest Deadpool. Fight cheorgraphy is amazing and story has character. The music and fights just stand the test of time.
