Barry Lyndon is a cinematography masterpiece, where every shot looks like a Baroque style painting "Barry had his faults, but none could say of him that he was not a good and tender father. He loved his son with a blind impartiality, denying him nothing. It is impossible to convey what high hopes he had for the boy, and how he indulged in fond anticipation of young Bryan's future success. But Fate had determined that he should leave none of his race behind him...and that he should finish his life poor, lonely, and childless." The cinematography in Barry Lyndon has to be one of the best I’ve ever seen. The static framing, the use of beautiful focal mass, circular, rule of thirds compositions, framing that looks like paintings and the beautiful lighting, result in stunning shots that look like Baroque style paintings. Stanley Kubrick used a specific type of lens from NASA with an 0.7 Aperture, which lets in enough light to film in candle lit rooms. So it doesn’t come at a surprise that the lighting in this film is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Not only the cinematography, but also the music and story are interesting. This film shows a very strong character arc of Barry Lyndon, which immerses you into his life trajectory. The classical music used in this film fits the overall tone very well. It’s recognizable and instantly reminds you of Barry Lyndon. Letterboxd: Mike_v_E

Barry Lyndon is like the film version of the Mona Lisa. Every scene was set as if it were a living painting. The acting, costumes, set design, and story very much made it feel as if you were there in that time period. The music was also complimentary in an exceptional way. Overall an excellent film, 5 stars.

Beautiful period piece from Kubrick. Impressive performances all around.

The movie is stretched; I'm not used to this much slow pacing. Ignore that, and you have a masterpiece.

A very long drawn out movie with no real point. Beautifully filmed though. Typical Kubrick and typical 70s movie.

Visually stunning. The life of an 18th century opportunist in search of love.

A film of great beauty and totally lacking in heart. But here's the thing: That is the entire point. So the question then becomes can you appreciate that this is a well made film that does exactly what it set out to do, or do you instead feel that a three hours study in melancholy and the emptiness of social status is perhaps the very opposite of why you watch movies in the first place. I'm more of the latter I'm afraid. This is the kind of art you get when a great artist focuses so completely on the theme and setting that he forgets we may also want to be entertained by plot and characters. This is not a good story. It's basically "Gone with the Wind", from Rex's perspective but with all the charm surgically removed and replaced with dour misanthropy. There are no good characters and even the protagonist is an empty shell. More something that represents something than a living human being and Barry is as good as it gets. But it is technically a masterpiece if nothing else. So I'm torn between an experience I found unpleasant and appreciation for Kubrick achieving exactly what he set out to do. Suffice to say it's my least favourite Kubrick movie (Though I've never seen "Eyes Wide Shut", so this could change).

This is probably the Stanley Kubrick film that is least remembered by audiences, but I believe that this is Kubrick's finest achievement.

The cinematography is amazing, and Kubrick staged each scene to perfection. The movie's pacing is a little slow, but you are rewarded with an epic story if you give it a chance.
