When humans reach the age of sixteen, they must undergo a process known as capping which places their mind under the control of the conquerors. In 2089, having learned the truth, cousins Will and Henry Parker embark on a journey to the White Mountains in search of a group of free men.

Help from FriendsWith some help from Zerlina and Papagena, Will and Beanpole escape from Goetz, and make their way to the stadium just in time for the games.

City of GoldThe games are over. The Tripods take Will and Fritz to the City of Gold, leaving Beanpole behind. The city seems to be escape-proof.

Hunt for EloiseAfter surviving a severe beating by the Black Guard, Fritz meets another uncapped person who shows him how the city gets its power. Will continues his education by the Masters, and learns of their plans for some of the human race.

The City of GoldAs Will and Fritz become more aware of what the Masters have planned for the Earth, they are brought to the Pool of Fire, where they meet one of the most powerful creatures in the City, a Cognosc.

The Cognosc Departs

The Cognosc DepartsWill kills his master when he tries to check out Will´s cap. He tries to leave the City via an underground channel.

Escape from the City of GoldWill escapes from the city leaving Fritz behind to exploit his important position. After drifting in the river; Will is found by, none other than, Beanpole. The two decide to hurry back to The White Mountains to share their new discoveries.
The Forest of Death

The Forest of DeathWill and Beanpole pretend to be clowns in Ali Pasha´s circus. Their goal now is to get back to the White Mountains and tell the free men about what the Masters are going to do to Earth. They are doublecrossed by Ali, though, who intends to give them all to the Tripods to finally receive their capping.
