⭐⭐⭐⭐½ – Hijack – Tension at 35,000 feet. This is a genuinely fantastic show, and Idris Elba is absolutely central to why it works so well. He plays a negotiator caught in an increasingly volatile situation, and he sells every beat of it — calm when he needs to be, visibly rattled when the cracks start to show, and always thinking three moves ahead. Once all the twists and turns have played out, the motivations behind the characters become clear and logical, but while it’s unfolding you’re constantly trying to stay ahead of the story rather than watching it passively. One of the show’s real strengths is its ensemble. There are a lot of actors I wasn’t familiar with — likely faces well known to British television audiences — and several of them stood out enough that I’ve since made a mental note to watch more of their work. That depth matters here, because the tension relies on everyone feeling like a real participant rather than background noise. The setting does a lot of heavy lifting too. With most of the action confined to the plane, the show leans hard into claustrophobia. Tight aisles, limited movement, and the constant awareness that there’s nowhere to go all amplify the stress. It makes even quiet conversations feel loaded, and the stakes never drift out of focus. A couple of the episodes end on proper cliff-hangers as well — the kind that actually make you say “just one more” instead of feeling manipulated. The pacing is sharp and deliberate. It builds pressure without rushing, and it trusts the audience to keep up rather than over-explaining every turn. I tore through the whole series in two days, which is usually the clearest sign that something has nailed its momentum. I’m already waiting for season two. 🍷 A small glass of something strong mid-flight — controlled, intense, and leaving your nerves buzzing long after touchdown.
