Stephan Derrick is a chief inspector with the Munich police who must solve murder cases with his assistant, Harry Klein. This show is based more on psychological methods to find out who the murderer was than on action scenes or car chases. Derrick prefers to talk to people and learn more about their personalities, so he considers the phone a vital instrument.

Dort macht sie eine entsetzliche Entdeckung: ihr Vater hängt tot an einem Strick. Heli widerspricht energisch dem Obduktionsbefund, der keinen Zweifel am Selbstmord des Kaufmanns aufkommen lässt. Sie kannte ihren Vater viel zu gut, niemals würde er auf diese Weise aus dem Leben scheiden. Nur mit Mühe gelingt es ihr, Oberinspektor Derrick davon zu überzeugen, dass er einen Mord aufzuklären hat.
