Where to Watch Weekend u Berniego
- 😵 Before “weekend plans” became complicated, there was Bernie. 🕶️ Weekend at Bernie’s is one of the many movies I grew up watching on a constant loop, even though it was clearly aimed more at adults than children. As I entered my teens, it became an annual tradition, especially around Labor Day weekend for obvious reasons. It never ceases to amaze me how many of the movie’s adult undertones I understood as a kid and how many others sailed completely over my head. Part of the fun of watching it for the umpteenth time was discovering another joke, reference, or detail I had somehow missed during the previous umpteenth viewings. This feels like one of those movies that came about because a group of friends got drunk one weekend and started swapping outrageous stories or old wives’ tales until the whole thing snowballed into an increasingly ridiculous joke. Yet the chemistry among Andrew McCarthy, Jonathan Silverman and Terry Kiser is so strong that everything feels strangely natural, despite the completely absurd premise. At its core, it is a buddy comedy with one additional complication: the third guy happens to be dead. It is a performance that only Terry Kiser could have pulled off so brilliantly. The jokes are light but effective, delivering plenty of grins and chuckles along the way. The slapstick helps balance everything out, thanks largely to our famously deceased friend, Bernie Lomax. The dialogue, arguments and personal exchanges between Larry and Richard are where the movie truly shines. Their friendship carries the story, while Bernie’s lifeless participation turns nearly every situation into physical comedy. The soundtrack is also wonderfully representative of its era and remains especially memorable to me, particularly for anyone who appreciates the late, great Jermaine Stewart. So, if you are willing to suspend your disbelief for something that does not involve horror, fantasy or science fiction, check out this somewhat forgotten Labor Day weekend classic.
