Kiedy samochód Foxów, Davida (Luke Wilson) i Amy (Kate Beckinsale) psuje się kilometry od cywilizacji, ich jedynym ratunkiem jest położony niedaleko motel. Dziwną atmosferę miejsca potęgują wyświetlane w telewizorach filmy – jedyny element rozrywkowy w budynku. Oglądając nisko-budżetowe horrory para odkrywa, że scenografia obrazów łudząco przypomina pokój, w którym przebywają. Odkrywszy ukryte kamery i zaryglowane drzwi David i Amy uświadamiają sobie, że mimowolnie zostali bohaterami następnej produkcji. Problem w tym, że znają już jej zakończenie i wcale nie jest ono happy endem...
