Felix Unger (Jack Lemmon), hipochondryk mający obsesję na punkcie czystości, zostaje pewnego dnia porzucony przez żonę. Bezskutecznie próbuje popełnić samobójstwo. Jego przyjaciel Oscar Madison (Walter Matthau), roztrzepany i bałaganiarski dziennikarz sportowy, zaprasza go do swojego mieszkania. Wkrótce okaże się, że przyjaciele nie mogą mieszkać pod jednym dachem, gdyż doprowadzają się wzajemnie do pasji.

🧹 Some friendships survive anything. Even roommates. 🥪 A story about two divorced men, the fastidious Felix Ungar and the gloriously messy Oscar Madison, The Odd Couple centers on the comic friction that erupts when they become roommates and promptly drive each other bananas. That central conflict, along with most of the major character beats, comes straight from Neil Simon’s original play. Although The Odd Couple predates my generation, it remains a prime example of how a writer’s work can resonate far beyond its own time. The film is faithful in spirit, tone and character, but it is not a literal filming of the stage production. Instead, it opens up the world, adjusts the structure for cinema and softens some of the darker edges while preserving the heart of Simon’s comedy. Walter Matthau reprised his Broadway role as Oscar Madison, carrying much of the original stage energy into the film. Jack Lemmon, cast as Felix for the movie, was different from the Broadway Felix, yet his performance became iconic in its own right. While both the play and the film contain darker undertones, the movie leans more consistently into comedy, dialing back some of the heavier dramatic moments found on stage. Even decades later, the humor still lands, proving that despite its era-specific references, the emotional truth of the characters continues to connect with younger audiences today.

"The Odd Couple" combines a brilliantly written script and exceptional performances from two leading actors to create an engaging film. While it explores darker themes, it successfully injects humor through the dynamic of two completely disparate individuals trying to cohabitate.
