    Too much walking

The Long Walk (2025) channels the tension and survival stakes of The Hunger Games but grounds them in a far more believable world. It’s gritty, haunting, and uncomfortably plausible — the kind of story that makes you wonder if society could really come to this. What sets it apart is its heart. Amid the desperation and endurance, compassion and empathy still flicker through the darkness, reminding you that even in humanity’s worst moments, decency tries to survive. A powerful, thought-provoking film that lingers long after the credits roll.

The Long Walk starts off right away, no lengthy preamble, and I was emotionally invested without even realizing it. Very quickly, it becomes clear how visceral and bleak the movie is going to be. If you know the premise or have watched the trailers, it might feel like the movie is going to be relatively predictable. It's a movie about people walking and talking, which can seem boring. However, those moments let the humanity shine through. The relationship between the characters and the way they bond despite all the terrible stuff around them becomes the beating heart of the movie. Make no mistake though, this is a dark and raw movie. The director Francis Lawrence is known as the guy who directed The Hunger Games, and you can see flashes of that in the dystopian framing. This movie doesn't shy away from the violence, and the sound design and score really help heighten the punctuated violence. JT Mollner is really starting to make a name for himself with Strange Darlings and now this. All of this only works because of the immense acting talent on display here though. Cooper Hoffman is following in his father's footsteps, but the standout is clearly David Jonsson who is phenomenal. He's a future Oscar winner for sure. I was blown away by him. Unfortunately, all of this builds towards an ending that feels anticlimactic. It is coming off some emotionally charged scenes, but I just don't think it really comes together in a thematically consistent way. I actually think it contradicts the message it has built up with the rest of the movie. I think we needed something a bit more to really flesh it out. This is trademark Stephen King unfortunately (though it significantly changes and improves an even worse book ending), but it made what should have been a haymaker of an ending land with significantly less impact.

What you're describing makes sense to me though. A movie can be good and still not hit emotionally the way you expected. The Long Walk has a strong premise and unsettling mood, but for some people the character attachment doesn’t land as deeply as the concept itself. That can leave the ending feeling more like, “wait… that’s it?” or emotionally distant instead of devastating. And on the ending specifically I won’t confirm or deny anything but it’s the kind of ending that tends to leave room for interpretation and debate, which is why so many people walk away unsure or stunned by it.

What a grave metaphor for the rat race that is the American Dream. Everything is there from poverty and desperation, the lottery of fortune, the blind obedience to social doctrine and the overarching threat of violence from the military. The police state depicted in the movie is very poignant in a time of authoritarianism in America where masked ICE agents are grabbing people on the basis of skin colour and violence is used to enforce political ideologies uninhibited by the law or even just human decency, Of course the eye cannot see itself and thus this will be wasted on most Americans as just another movie "with cool guns and sh!t" but time again movies like this and 'Civil War' are holding up a mirror to US Imperialism and fascist policies.

Meh. Interesting enough to keep watching to see who dies next, but not really worth watching overall. Just about some people walking, each with different reasons to walk and different wishes.

    ## Synopsis A group of young men compete in a contest known as "The Long Walk", where they walk to be the last one walking or be executed, all to keep order. ## Review You would think that a movie about people walking for days would be boring as all get out. However, this is the complete opposite of what you get from this movie. It is full of real emotion and energy for a simple premise of a movie. The main character sounds so much like a coworker of mine that if I closed my eyes, I would place money it was hit. The cadence and the voice itself match my coworker so well. More importantly, they fit the character. An idealist that is there for a specific purpose. Not just because they won the "lottery," but for something more intrinsic to the story. There isn't a person or character in the movie that I felt didn't make sense, or did do a great job. I will say that Mark Hamill is so weirdly aggressive in this movie as compared to the rest that it almost seems out of place. However, if you through in a dude who feels he owns the world, than it works. There is a lot of brutal violence in this. I typically save this for the "Parental Rating" section, but it is a lot. Having recently watched [[Midsommar]] on this work trip, that review will come out soon, I am not sure which has a more brutal death scene. It can be difficult to watch. ## [My Rating] I was interested in this movie from the trailers. Mainly for the review and conversation it could have. I am not a big Stephen King person, but I understand how good his work is. This movie is outstanding, and I am curious how people say that the book is even better. It just might be the horror version ofThe Martian and it's book counterpart The Martian]]. As I have discussed this movie with the other host of the podcast and coworkers, I had made one state. "This is a 9 of a movie, that if you made an argument for 10, I don't know if I could disagree." The only reason it isn't a 10 is that the pacing, pun unintended, can be slow. Slow enough that you think that it needs to speed up and then something crazy happens. It is a 9. ## [Parental Rating] In a single song voice, you'd have the statement "Hell na. Na na na na nah." Hopefully you know that song. There is an incredible amount of language and violence. The violence is extreme and will make you shake your head in surprise. My dad would be out relatively quickly from the language. My mom would be out for that same reason. If she made it through that, then the first death she would turn it off. Rejected by both.

Cooper Hoffman and David Johnson are easily the best part of this performance. Hamill is in this but his ham up acting of The Major is more cringe than scary. Unfortunately that's about it. If he had not had his story generator write this it never would have been written at all with his lack of imagination. Typical Stephen King movie. Great premise... had to cant stick the landing one bit.

Like Squid game but being the last one walking. Does drag a bit in the middle but has some good characters that keep you interested until the eventual conclusion.

The Long Walk might just be one of the best films of the decade! The film has a fantastic premise that is simple but so effective. The cast is pretty good and all deliver outstanding performances that will make you tear up. The film visually looks really good and is shot very well. The characters are incredible and you care about each and every one of them and you don’t want any of them to die. The dialogue is great too. The film also has a great message on brotherhood and always helping a brother out. My only issue with the movie is how dark it is, I loved it but I probably won’t watch it for a long time because of how emotionally heavy it is and it makes it hard to watch. But overall this was an incredible experience and a movie I definitely recommend.

An interesting look at the long road of life. The concept of freedom, control of choice, the never ending slog, the deterioration of hope... in a nutshell, the illusion and disillusion of life itself. The desire to ascend from the enforced churn and be amongst the key holders with promises of wealth and fortune, whilst watching those around you, loved ones or not, get left behind, literally at the side of the road. A sad and dystopian look at modern reality... however, I felt it really struggled in its metaphor to perhaps highlight enough meaning in blind ignorance. Whilst the friends keep each other going, it suggests little more than that in real life, which is most certainly at odds with the simple pleasures most of us enjoy each day, whilst not perhaps celebrating them with enthusiasm. A cynical look at mundane life against the oppression of those living in wealth and power... which from the pen of a multi millionaire, perhaps misses the point of the miracle of everyday life, living in riches or not. What is it 'they' say about the journey and destination?
