Where to Watch Odlot
- The first movie directed by Gordon Parks, Jr. The life of a cocaine dealer in early 1970s New York City who wants to escape the street life. Ron O'Neal plays the role perfectly in his big screen debut. The soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield made the movie a classic, probably one of the best soundtracks of the 1970s besides Isaac Hayes Shaft soundtrack.
- A TIMELESS CLASSIC whose legendary influence on Hip Hop & American Culture is proof "SUPERFLY" is as relevant today as ever RON O'NEAL is perfectly cast as a street-smart entrepreneur "Trying to get over" on a racist corrupt system CURTIS MAYFIELD'S musical score should have won an Oscar & Director GORDON PARKS JR captures the world of a "Player" that's never been equaled
- I admit, I enjoy the occasional blaxploitation film. They have a significant place in history. There are a few real masterpieces out there.. Eg Pam Grier as Coffy. The plot in this film is heavily focused on what I can describe as superficial. It doesn't feel like anyone is actually able to own their charectar. The sex scene looked sweaty and gross and lasts a solid ten to fifteen minutes. His girl acting all lovey dovey over a plot to become a big time drug dealer.. Their relationship gave off strong 'we can finally start a family' vibes. I'm not at the end quite yet and can guess he probably ehm, *isn't*, able to secure that life for them. Or any life.. I'm ok with him either ending up in jail or dying by the end. It's like scarface except no yelling about polluted uteruses or using submachine guns / chainsaws.
- Surprisingly mediocre. 5/10 A film whose fame precedes it, largely thanks to Curtis Mayfield’s soundtrack but also due to being one of the movies that put African-American cinema on the map. So it was with great expectations that I watched this…and then was sorely disappointed. The plot is quite basic, contains many inconsistencies and holes and seems more about style than substance. Performances are quite amateurish – there’s a reason you’ve never heard of any of the actors! The Curtis Mayfield soundtrack should be a highlight and it is but even here there’s a sour note: ‘Pusherman’ gets played to death! The wardrobe department is in top form though. Overall, there’s more negatives than positives and the accolades seem misgiven. This said it was probably more impactful at the time rather than now, over fifty years later.
