The narrative framing captures the paradox of the uprising well: the hope of regaining agency is tempered by the awareness of how immense a struggle still awaits its participants. I really enjoyed the film’s swashbuckling atmosphere, which avoids the national martyrdom so common in Polish historical films. The scene at the manor table particularly stayed with me, evoking certain well-known films where outward politeness conceals a suffocating, oppressive atmosphere and a growing sense that violence is inevitable. Scarborn presents a world in which every interaction is driven by self-interest, class contempt, or the threat of violence. Historically speaking, the greatest achievement of the Kościuszko Uprising was awakening a sense of civic consciousness among the peasantry and a sense of belonging to the national community, and this is precisely what the film portrays so well. It does not reduce the insurrection to a romantic act of rebellion, but shows the birth of a consciousness that survived despite its ultimate failure.
