I first watched Martyrs 16 years ago, and it left a lasting, overwhelming impression. Despite seeing hundreds of gore and body horror films since then, revisiting it proved it still holds incredible power. It remains in my top three—French extreme cinema is unmatched.

It's a really raw, creepy, sickening movie and it reinvented the horror genre, some people find it disturbing, I really liked it.

Not aged very well, this movie tries very hard to impress you with visuals, but fails to deliver it due to an aseptic way of pursuing body horror and methodical violence. Half psychological, half philosophical/cult horror, the movie falls apart due to lack of actual substance. The final twist ends up resulting between brilliant and comical due to his lack of real pathos.
