The Bad The central relationship involving the young Mathilda (Natalie Portman) is highly problematic, bordering on uncomfortable, despite intentions. The script relies heavily on genre archetypes, occasionally sacrificing nuance for dramatic impact. Furthermore, the film's tone shifts abruptly between stylized action and maudlin sentimentality, which can feel jarring. I think Jean Reno is solely responsible for saving this movie from tipping over the edge to disgusting, this could have been Besson at his very worst.
