Hatchet 1944
Directed by Yevgeni ZvezdakovOdintsov's reconnaissance group, which includes Ivan Rodin, is making its way deep into the rear with a special mission: to smuggle a young man named Savichev across the front lines. They don't tell Odintsov who he is, where he's from, or how he came to join the partisans. Since the Germans are searching for them, they are forced to return by a different route. The morning after the arduous journey, Rodin, while the others are sleeping, catches a thief. A young Roma boy, Marko, explains that he escaped from a hospital where he and other children were having their blood drawn. The scouts rescue the children, but it's impossible to break through to the front lines with them. Rodin recalls a teacher he saw in one of the villages and says they can wait for our forces to advance at the school. It turns out that the director has been hiding several Roma families in the basement of this school since the very beginning of the war: he pretended to be a German supporter to keep them from poking their noses into his school. Odintsov allows the radio operator to contact them; they report the rescued children and provide their coordinates. The Germans search the yards, barns, and warehouses, and then head for the school. The principal reports that all is well, but upon hearing the children's cries, the Nazis begin storming the school.
