John has lost all his money. He sits outside a diner in the desert when Sydney happens along, buys him coffee, then takes him to Reno and shows him how to get a free room without losing much money. Under Sydney's fatherly tutelage, John becomes a successful small-time professional gambler, and all is well, until he falls for Clementine, a cocktail waitress and sometimes hooker.

Hoffman nearly steals the movie in a 3-minute scene, great film.

I have a predilection for father/son themed stories in movies, (Field of Dreams is one of my favs and I know almost nothing about baseball) and Hard Eight delivers that vibe in an original way. The cast is stacked, I love Philip Baker Hall's quiet and understated performance as Sydney, his kind and patient scenes with John are why I come back every couple of years for a re-watch. Philip Seymour Hoffman shows up for one scene and as expected just bursts off the screen, I laugh out loud every time. At 24 PTA shows restraint and a sense of style far beyond his years. It's a shame Rysher Entertainment basically buried the movie and a lot of PTA fans have never seen or even heard of his gem of a debut feature. 👍👍 8.5/10

“never ignore a man’s courtesy.” promising neo-noir start with an interesting midpoint development that ultimately leads to a mostly flat back half. philip baker hall carries the narrative to its conclusion with a stellar performance, but he’s not the most memorable philip in this picture either. i also don’t quite know how to come to terms with how the film depicts women, especially with clementine’s relationship to john.

Simple and thoughtful examination of fatherhood under complicated circumstances.
