Ambitiously, Hirani aimed to make a social statement about global migration with the help of India’s biggest star. Instead of focusing on the problems that causes people to leave India, Dunki undercuts its own message - making a Bollywood film for a global audience instead of one for an Indian audience.

The film tackles the perilous 'donkey flight' immigration route, yet it entirely fails to evoke the genuine terror, tension, and desperation inherent to that reality. It stands as one of Rajkumar Hirani’s weakest efforts, trading raw emotional stakes for generic, feel good tropes. The first half starts out pretty engaging, but after that, the story just drags on and on. The acting is good across the board, but the weak execution makes it a disappointment.
