- Varun19 października 2024Maybe this is a tall order but the one thing I wanted from this movie was to feel the same exhilarating excitement I had as an investor in GME back in January of 2021, and it failed to provide that. I enjoyed the telling of DFV’s story and family background. Paul Dano is great as usual. The side stories of the regular investor folks was so bland, it did not grip me at all. The success stories people were sharing on Reddit at the time were way more heartwarming. And the way it portrayed the downfall of the hedge fund managers was pretty lame too, it ended too quick with a basic info dump. The revolutionary feeling and rallying cries that took place in r/WallStreetBets was not adequately explored here. If you’re gonna make a movie about an event that happened not too long ago, make it more fun, interesting and emotional. Make the audience feel the stakes and the roller coaster ride of being an investor in a highly volatile stock. Make the downfall of these rich pricks more gratifying. I doubt this movie is gonna be interesting to anyone who wasn’t familiar with this event before.

I thought it was just going to be another Wall Street drama, but it turned out to be way more fun, way more emotional, and honestly kind of inspiring. It takes something as confusing and frustrating as the stock market and somehow turns it into a fast-paced underdog story that actually makes sense — and makes you care. It is all based on the true story of the GameStop stock explosion that happened in 2021. When regular people on Reddit decided to take on hedge funds and drive up the stock price, it became this huge moment where everyone realized just how rigged the system can be. Dumb Money tells that story, but instead of focusing on the billionaires, it focuses on the little guys. And that is what makes it work. Paul Dano plays Keith Gill, the YouTuber and everyday investor who kicked everything off. His performance is great. He is quiet, passionate, and just a normal guy who really believes in what he is doing. You feel how much he cares, and that makes the whole story feel personal. He is not trying to get rich quick — he just believes regular people should not always get crushed by the system. And that message really comes through. The movie has a great cast. Pete Davidson adds some comic relief as Keith’s brother, and he has some of the funniest lines. America Ferrera plays a nurse who puts her savings into GameStop, and her scenes are full of emotion. Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, and Vincent D’Onofrio all play hedge fund billionaires, and they bring just the right amount of arrogance and panic to make you root against them. You can feel the tension from both sides, and that keeps the story moving. The pacing is tight, and the editing is sharp. There is a lot going on — multiple characters, tons of internet slang, financial terms, live streams, and legal drama — but it never feels overwhelming. The movie breaks it all down in a way that makes it feel clear and exciting without dumbing it down. It uses humor and real internet posts to help tell the story, and that mix gives it a cool, modern style that fits the subject perfectly. It also taps into something deeper — the frustration that so many people feel about money, power, and being constantly underestimated. You watch these characters take a risk, stand up for something, and fight back in their own way. And yeah, it gets messy, and not everything turns out perfectly, but it still feels like a win. It is about taking the system that always wins and shaking it for once. I give Dumb Money 4 out of 5 stars because it is smart, funny, and actually says something important. It shows how one small voice can turn into a movement, and it does it without being preachy or boring. It is a true story, but it plays like a great drama with just the right amount of energy and heart. Overall Dumb Money is a solid, fast-moving film that turns a real-life financial moment into something personal, emotional, and way more fun than I expected. It made me think, it made me laugh, and it made me remember that sometimes regular people do get to win.

- stuhannaford30 grudnia 2025A modern day David vs Goliath. Excellently paced, exciting and well acted by all the interconnecting parts. I wasn’t part of the craze at the time, but remember the uproar, which this conveys really well, and from both collective and individual standpoints. The only thing it doesn’t do quite so well, is explain what on earth was actually going on, and what it all meant. If you know your shorts from your squeeze, you’re in the know, but without that basic detailing, I found myself just wanting a little guy win… although I wasn’t sure exactly how or what game was being played. For entertainment, it makes no difference, and is highly recommended. For me, it’s The Big Short, Dumbed down.

- Kevin Ward2 lipca 2025It’s a fascinating story in it’s own right, and the film is an adequate recounting of the events, elevated by the ensemble cast. Dane Dehaan as a retail store manager might be my favorite casting, but the entire ensemble makes this instantly watchable. The drama unfolds with scarce little tension or fanfare in the ups and downs. Maybe that comes from my want to actually see the billionaires sh🤩ting their pants instead of just Seth Rogen casually stating that he lost a billion dollars two consecutive days. And even though we’ve seen explanations of “shorts” before in other films like The Big Short, I really think this film could have used a better explanations of shorts, short squeezes, pump and dumps, etc. Still, these kinds of financial scandals will always captivate me and Dumb Money is no exception. I was planning on going solo, but when I told my kids what I was going to see, they all wanted to tag along. So while the profane language and WAP playing on repeat keep me from recommending this for kids, per set, to my surprise, my kids all really enjoyed it and were equally captivated by the story.
