W niedalekiej przyszłości Paryż został podzielony na trzy strefy, rozdzielające klasy społeczne, gdzie sztuczna inteligencja ALMA zrewolucjonizowała pracę policji. Dopóki jej wynalazca nie zostaje zamordowany, Salia i Zem, dwaj policjanci będący całkowitymi przeciwieństwami, są zmuszeni do współpracy, by poprowadzić śledztwo.
Directed by Cédric Jimenez

There’s something about French sci-fi that makes even a slightly formulaic buddy-cop plot feel like it showed up wearing a better coat than everybody else. Dog 51 may follow some familiar beats, but it’s still a slick, moody, very enjoyable ride: part mystery, part romance, part “oh great, this future looks way too possible.” The divided Paris of “zones” feels less like wild fantasy and more like a warning label, with echoes of today’s border politics and an especially uncomfortable Israel-Gaza vibe, while the glimpses of grimy, desperate life in Zone 3 give the movie real texture beyond the central whodunit. The male lead gets extra points for looking like an actual worn-down human instead of a shampoo-commercial action hero, and he’s all the better for it; meanwhile, I’d never seen the female lead before, and even if some viewers think her range runs on one facial setting, I thought she was terrific here—tough, vulnerable, and believable enough to sell both the case and the chemistry. In the end, this is less a bang-bang future-cop movie than a smart, melancholy detective story that sneaks in a love story and leaves you wondering how long before we all get our own ALMA judging us from the cloud.
