Where to Watch Cyrano
- DavidBunnyDad1 dzień temuDirector Joe Wright's stunning update of the classic 1897 French play is a full-on musical adapted from Erica Schmidt's 2018 stage play, boasting outstanding original songs from the American rock band The National. Schmidt gives the hero a normal size nose but makes him a dwarf, played by the great Peter Dinklage in both the stage and screen version. Despite his stature, Dinklage's Cyrano is a swashbuckling dynamo who can seemingly rise to every challenge of sword or pen until he's foiled by the fickle fates of romantic attraction. The performances of young leads Haley Bennett and Kelvin Harrison Jr. are captivating and pitch perfect. I'm hard-pressed to find a single flaw in this film. The singing and dancing are great, the colors are lush, sensual and painterly without straying into the garish, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey's elegant camera moves in perfect harmony with the music, and Dinklage, with one of cinema's great faces, is the dignified, intelligent and ultimately heart-breaking protagonist at the center of it all. If the test of a great musical is whether you find yourself humming at least one of its tunes after the movie's over, Cyrano passes that too, thanks to the incandescent ``I Need More'' and ``I'd Give Anything.'' It's so much more than the music, though: I can't think of any part of Cyrano that doesn't succeed in spectacular fashion. The story might be tragic, but this movie is pure joy.
