I wish more people had seen this. Such a beautiful and moving take on growing up. I’m a sucker for magical realism that emphasizes the dark reality of our world.

Wow, I loved this. A little magical realism, Barry Keoghan serenading hallucinogenic frogs with some Coldplay, some of the cutest little kids ever, a killer Saltburn reference—I just really enjoyed the hell out of this coming of age drama. Went into this blind and so I had the thought “Oh THAT’s why this is titled Bird” all throughout the movie, up until the final act.

Bird had just enough touching magical moments to outweigh its misses and a few lulling sections to sway me towards an overall positive outlook. When Bird works it's quite affecting. It manages to capture the idiosyncracies of the setting quite well and pairs an alarming grittyness dealing with familial neglect, dysfunction and the growing pains of growing up in such an impoverished chaotic environment coupled with identity and sexuality discoveries. It's heavy and almost overwhelming but kept in balance by moments of whimsy and Barry Keoghan's charisma.

Identity & Growing Up As a coming-of-age story, *Bird* captures the struggles of adolescence, self-discovery, and the search for belonging

It has an 86 on RT and is distributed by MUBI, which also distributed The Substance and The Girl with the Needle, so I figured I’d enjoy it. It’s not bad, but the story felt a bit aimless to me. There’s a mystical element tied to one of the main characters that’s hinted at throughout and becomes more prominent later in the film. Barry Keoghan is in it, though not in a major role—despite the trailer making it seem like he’d have a bigger presence.
