Where to Watch Babylon A.D.

Unfortunately, it never comes together into a coherent story. The film jumps from post-apocalyptic adventure to science fiction to religious allegory, never spending enough time developing any one idea before moving on to the next. The plot quickly becomes messy and confusing, and by the time the abrupt ending arrives, it feels like the movie simply gave up rather than reaching a satisfying conclusion. Visually, there’s plenty to admire. The dystopian vision of Russia contrasts nicely with the bustling New York City of the future, and the CGI, explosions, and production design create plenty of eye candy. If you switch off your brain and simply enjoy Vin Diesel doing his best bargain-bin John Wick impression, there’s enough action to stay entertained. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, and Mélanie Thierry, who make the most of the material they’re given. Ironically, I watched this right after Doomsday, and the similarities were hard to ignore. Both are expensive-looking 2008 sci-fi films filled with recognizable actors, impressive visuals, and ambitious ideas, yet neither delivers a memorable story. In both cases, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the filmmakers tried to cram too many concepts into a single movie. This could have been so much more. Instead, it’s an overstuffed spectacle that’s enjoyable in the moment but ultimately easy to forget.

I still find it interesting enough to be in my collection, but it's not something I would recommend, unless you're a huge fan of Vin Diesel and mystical vague storylines.
- Callum28 grudnia 2025⭐⭐⭐½ – Babylon A.D. – Grit, gunfire, and a plot that eats itself. It’s been a while since I last watched this — maybe eighteen months — but the opening still sticks. Brutal, grounded, and confidently bleak. For a moment, it feels like it knows exactly what it wants to be: a hard-edged, near-future slog through a world that’s already lost its soul. Then the story keeps going. What starts as grimy sci-fi slowly drifts into outright absurdity, piling ideas on ideas until the tone collapses under its own weight. You can almost feel the film fighting itself — part street-level dystopia, part grand metaphysical nonsense — and never quite deciding which one deserves to win. The result is messy, uneven, and undeniably compromised. I’ve heard it called a poor man’s Children of Men. I can’t really judge that comparison firsthand, so I’ll take it with a grain of salt, but I can see where the sentiment comes from. Babylon A.D. wants to say something about faith, control, and the future of humanity — it just doesn’t have the discipline to land those ideas cleanly. And yet… I still kind of like it. Maybe it’s the atmosphere. Maybe it’s Vin Diesel dialling things down into a weary, functional performance. Or maybe it’s Mark Strong, who reliably elevates anything he’s in just by showing up and taking the material seriously. Whatever the reason, this film earned a few bonus points in my head despite its flaws. It’s not good-good. But it’s interesting-bad in a way that sticks longer than it probably should. 🥃 A cheap whisky in a scratched glass — rough, warming, and better than you expect once you’ve committed to it.
