Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα ενώ κατάγεται από την Σαντορίνη και την Κρήτη. Έχει παντρευτεί 4 φορές. Δεύτερη σύζυγος του ήταν η τραγουδίστρια και ηθοποιός Καίτη Χωματά, με την οποία απέκτησαν δύο κόρες. Τρίτη του σύζυγος ήταν η ηθοποιός Λίλα Καφαντάρη με την οποία απέκτησαν μία κόρη, την επίσης ηθοποιό, Ηλιάνα Μαυρομάτη.
