Boone Sawyer, who aspires to a career in rock and roll music, despite the advice of his stern father, Merit Sawyer, who wants Boone to join him in the automobile repair business. The setting of the series is Tennessee in the early 1950s, when great changes began to occur in popular music, with the rise of Elvis Presley.

The DecisionBoone confronts his parents with his decision to make music his career, with or without their support. Mr. Johnson dies and leaves his guitar to Boone. At the funeral Boone's parents announce they will support him in any career he chooses.
The Graduation

The GraduationRome almost does not graduate after an altercation with Mr. Slater, his science teacher and senior advisor, who suspends him for allegedly stealing. Rome earns his diploma in spite of Slater and ends up riding his motorcycle on stage to collect it.
Chance of a Lifetime

Chance of a LifetimeA music promoter offers Boone and Rome an opportunity to appear on ""National Sockhop."" Merit refuses to sign Boone's contract and Boone forges his name. Merit has a heart attack and Boone decides not to go after all. He believes there will be other chances.

Hard to GetBoone gets involved with a woman who has a five-year-old son and runs moonshine for her ex. Boone's parents are arrested and he puts himself in danger to protect the woman and her son.

The Front LineRome gets drafted and Boone enlists so they can be together. Boone fails the physical and is rejected. As Rome prepares to leave he hears the Korean War is over. While he is celebrating his motorcycle falls, crushing his knee and preventing him from going into the army.
The Runaway

The RunawayCousin Geneva leaves her husband and comes to Nashville to get Boone to help her launch a music career. Her first appearance does not go very well, but Boone discovers she has a talent for sewing. Geneva's husband joins her as she begins her new career as a seamstress.
