"Mambi a young girl who embodies the experience of self-education living with her widowed father, discovers he suffers from a gambling addiction resulting to unending debts. David turns into a runaway when creditors come knocking leaving Mambi to deal with the chaos. She embarks on gambling in street games and with a winning streak Mambi pays off the debts then goes searching for her father and she brings him home. David despite his broken heart realizes his daughter will do anything for him. He starts taking money from her, borrowing money from any and every one around them. Mambi completely gives up her childhood to take care of David. Pa Dan, the neighbourhood drunk determined to change the course of her life begins to meddle. He takes Mambi to a school to show her what children her age should be doing but Mambi shows less interest every time as she believes it is her duty to take care of her father. Mambi in an attempt to repress her want for a formal education and a normal childhood creates Mbassi a fictional character who tries to convince her that she is wrong. Mambi begins to see that she is not wrong in wanting what normal kids want, she stops paying his debts and starts saving the money for school. Soon after David struggles to keep Pa Dan away from Mambi when he comes home to find an admission letter. Her bold move is met by harsh disapproval despite her pleading. David steals the money saved for her fees and Mambi is left wondering and gradually accepting her faith as he gambles away the money. Pa Dan takes a risk and finds David he tells him of his experience as a father and how drinking cost him his family and everything he holds dear. He convinces David that he still had a chance to save his relationship to his daughter"
