- Kevin Ward6. juli 2025Really loved this. A throwback to classic monster movies of the 1930’s. Michael Giacchino really impressed with his debut particularly in the art direction. The aesthetic of the sets, makeup and especially the monster look exceptional presented in beautiful black and white. My only real gripe is that I wish that this were longer. Definitely looking forward to seeing what directorial projects Giacchino gets to take on next.

The direction confidently leans into shadow, contrast, and practical-feeling action, creating a distinctive mood. The soundtrack complements this approach, adding tension and charm without overwhelming the visuals. The script moves quickly and efficiently, keeping the pacing tight and purposeful. Its simplicity allows the tone and style to take center stage, making the experience feel cohesive and easy to enjoy. Some viewers might wish for a deeper exploration of its characters or themes, as the shorter runtime limits how much the story can fully develop its ideas. Even so, it succeeds as a stylish and memorable experiment within the franchise, proving that a more contained and genre-focused approach can be just as entertaining as larger-scale superhero spectacles.

It's a loving homage to classic monster movies, executed with a unique flair that truly sets it apart within the MCU. I wish Marvel had the balls to make more content like this, not only in terms of its refreshingly darker and more mature content, but also in its daring to take such stylistic and tonal risks. There's also something to be said for these tight narratives. Not every project needs to be 3+ hours.
