Based on the 1930s comic strip, The Shadow is put up against his archenemy Shiwan Khan, who plans to take over the world by holding a city to ransom using an atom bomb. Using his powers of invisibility and "the power to cloud men's minds", The Shadow comes blazing to the rescue with explosive results.

This one has aged well. Takes me back to a simple time when it’s just a movie, not the next blockbuster… The Shadow know!

Hot garbage. Nothing really redeemable in this one.

Caught this one on TV, probably late night, back when superhero movies were still rare and pulp adaptations were trying to find their footing. Alec Baldwin plays Lamont Cranston, aka The Shadow, a vigilante with psychic powers, a dark past and a cape that billows like it’s auditioning for Batman. The setup is pure pulp: 1930s New York, an atom bomb threat and an archenemy named Shiwan Khan who wants to hold the city hostage. The Shadow uses “the power to cloud men’s minds” and a lot of dramatic whispering to save the day. The production design is gorgeous Art Deco meets noir, with swirling fog and scarlet lips. The cast is stacked: Ian McKellen, Tim Curry, Penelope Ann Miller and Peter Boyle all show up to add texture. But the tone wobbles. It’s too campy to be serious, too serious to be camp. The pacing drags, the action feels restrained and the script never quite decides if it’s parody or homage. I liked the ambition, the aesthetic and the attempt to resurrect a radio-era hero. But it never quite clicked. It’s the kind of movie that made adult years feel visually rich, narratively confused, and just nostalgic enough to earn a shrug.
