Nice pulp influenced superhero adventure yarn, clearly influenced by Indiana Jones and the 1989 Batman. The Neville Sinclair take on Errol Flynn is particularly inspired as is the excellent Timothy Dalton choice to play him. The rest of the cast is equally excellent and the script gives the characters a lot of pathos, surprisingly Jenny's character played by the gorgeous Jennifer Connolly is given a nice arc of her own. The aireal photography is excellent and so is the visual fx and production design. Great script, direction, cinematography and score round this out. The movie has aged extremely well and has improved over time. 9/10

I first saw The Rocketeer in the cinema and it’s one of those movies that really benefits from the big screen treatment, the music, the flying sequences, the old Hollywood style, all of it feels larger than life. It’s a throwback adventure that plays things straight, with a sincerity you don’t see much anymore. Billy Campbell makes Cliff Secord instantly likable, a regular guy who suddenly finds himself with a rocket pack and way too many people trying to kill him for it. Jennifer Connelly brings warmth and presence and Timothy Dalton is perfect as the charming but dangerous movie star villain. The whole film has that 1930s pulp serial energy: gangsters, Nazis, airshows and a hero who’s just stubborn enough to keep going. It’s the kind of movie that sticks with you because of how it felt when you first watched it, adventurous, earnest and full of style. Seeing it in the cinema gave it that extra bit of magic and revisiting it now still brings back that sense of classic, old school heroism.
