- Garrett Wilkins-7 d.Despite presenting itself as a creature feature, The Monster's greatest ambitions lie in the emotional conflict between its central characters rather than the threat lurking beyond them. Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine share a believable chemistry that gives the film a stronger emotional foundation than many horror films of its scale. Bryan Bertino also deserves credit for creating an atmosphere of isolation that remains consistently effective, allowing the tension to build without relying solely on conventional scares. Despite those strengths, I never felt the film fully capitalized on the ideas it introduced. The emotional drama and the horror elements often seemed to compete for attention rather than strengthen one another, leaving neither side as impactful as it could have been. While I appreciated the film's restraint and its attempt to tell a more intimate story, I finished it feeling that the concept never developed into anything particularly memorable. It is a competently made horror film, but one that ultimately left a much fainter impression than I had hoped.
