- James Saenz8. mai 2025i have an on again off again relationship with jj abrams’ approach to filmmaking and storytelling. i don’t always like the way he shoots action, and this is one of his films where i wasn’t enjoying it as much as i would’ve liked. the stunts are insane as usual, but the way it’s filmed and edited is a little too jarring and haphazard for my taste, and his visual style doesn’t have the same appeal as woo’s or de palma’s. this is a rougher approach to filmmaking, which is tonally in line with the story abrams chose to tell, but in my eyes this style really suffers from the lack of de palma’s swanky and reserved formalness and woo’s bombastic kineticism. this is also the least visually appealing of the three so far, with some garish color grading and mostly conventional cinematography. that being said, i liked how this entry unofficially starts the series trend of tom cruise sprinting for ungodly distances and the way that sequence was filmed was really gripping. this is without a doubt cruise’s best acting in the franchise so far, and ethan hunt’s commitment to his relationship with julia is compelling, but that’s the extent of my praise for the narrative and characterizations. all of the side characters typically feel hollow outside of ethan in these movies, but that feels the most apparent here. philip seymour hoffman is an absolute tour de force, and while he’s genuinely stellar in this role and carries the performance with this eerie gravitas of barely reserved fury, his character isn’t given much to do and feels like wasted potential. the twists are predictable and not very satisfying, whereas similar twists like the masks felt fresh in the original film and campy fun in the sequel. i still had a good time, but i miss the over the top flair of woo’s directorial hand and lament what could’ve been had the series retained the paranoia and anxiety of de palma’s entry. i’m also coming to terms with the fact that ethan hunt won’t be doing magic tricks anymore and that’s honestly the saddest part. his little card trick scene in the original was so quirky and added so much personality to both his character and the film.

The standout sequence is where Ethan Hunt and team real-time create the Phillip Seymour Hoffman scooby-doo mask and transform Cruise to Hoffman before our eyes. Some really creative film-making. Really fun flick and way better than I remembered. In fact, it’s possible I hadn’t actually seen this before because I remembered virtually nothing about it. Really looking forward to the McQuarrie era films now.

After the somewhat existential crisis that was Mission: Impossible 2 (also known as “Ethan’s Hair: The Movie”), this third installment brings the series back to actual espionage, emotional stakes, and the occasional explosion that makes your living room vibrate. Cruise slides back into his impossible form with the same energy of a man who does his own stunts because he refuses to acknowledge mortality. He’s intense, charismatic, and just the right amount of unhinged. The supporting cast is sharp — Ving Rhames returns to remind us that calm, competent people still exist in this universe, while newcomer Simon Pegg brings much-needed humor to balance out all the running and yelling. His timing is impeccable, proving once again that the British can find a joke in literally any life-threatening situation. About thirty minutes into the movie, I had a moment of déjà vu — the world looked suspiciously shiny, emotional close-ups lingered a little too long, and there was enough lens flare to signal passing aircraft. That’s when it hit me: oh right, J.J. Abrams directed this. By the end, I was half-expecting a Lost crossover episode or a secret Dharma Initiative logo hidden in the background. The plot itself is solid — a much stronger story than the previous entry, which mostly involved Tom Cruise rock climbing and brooding. Here, we actually get stakes, character depth, and a villain played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who delivers menace so quietly it feels like a threat to your soul. If Mission: Impossible 2 was a glossy music video about sunglasses, then Mission: Impossible III is a grounded thriller that almost feels like the franchise growing up. A fitting end to the trilogy — before it went on to have four more movies and counting.

His performance is chilling, calculated, and gives the film a genuine sense of menace that the series had been missing. That said, while the film is thrilling, it doesn't quite reach the creative highs or intricate plotting of later entries in the franchise. Some parts feel more like setup than standout, but overall it balances action, character, and suspense far better than M:I-2. Overall, a strong, fast-paced spy thriller with a memorable villain, marking a confident step forward for the franchise.
