A high schooler (Saoirse Ronan) must navigate a loving but turbulent relationship with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) over the course of her senior year.
- James Saenz12. april 2026“i was on top!! who the fuck is on top their first time??!!” stellar film. my favorite character this time around is the football coach who takes over for the drama club. i was also the only one laughing in the theater, which is a shame because it deserves a roomful of laughs.
- Garrett Wilkins30. juli 2026Growing up has a funny way of making yesterday’s certainty become today’s embarrassment. Lady Bird understands that better than many coming-of-age films I’ve seen. Greta Gerwig never tries to sand down Christine’s rough edges, and this is exactly why she feels so real. She can be frustrating one moment and deeply sympathetic the next without the film ever asking us to take her side. Saoirse Ronan captures those contradictions beautifully, giving a performance that feels alive because it never reaches for easy likability. Sacramento isn’t treated as somewhere to escape nearly as much as somewhere you only learn to appreciate after you’ve already decided to leave it behind. That gave the film an emotional perspective that impacts you more than you realize. What stayed with me most wasn’t any single dramatic confrontation but rather how often Gerwig trusts ordinary moments to carry the weight of the story. A car ride, an awkward conversation, or a passing disagreement slowly become the foundation of a relationship that neither Lady Bird nor her mother fully know how to express. Laurie Metcalf is extraordinary because she never turns Marion into the kind of parent we’re expected to either love or resent. She just feels like a mother doing her best but thoroughly falls short of the impossible standard she’s set for herself. My only criticism is that the film stays so closely tied to Lady Bird’s perspective that a few supporting characters never receive the same depth as its two central figures. That’s a small complaint, though, against a film so rich in emotional honesty. Lady Bird earns every feeling through careful observation, finding something quietly universal in the messy process of becoming someone your younger self never could have imagined.
- macaronz28. april 2026The film perfectly portrays the restless energy of a young girl determined to find herself outside her hometown. At its core, the movie tackles the heartbreaking tension of a daughter who feels her mother "doesn't like her," even while they share a deep, unspoken love. Despite her flaws, Lady Bird’s evolution into a goal-oriented young woman by the end of the film is incredibly rewarding to watch.
- James Tang17. januar 2025This was a good movie that should be great, but isn't. There are some genuinely great performances, funny bits and observations, interesting characters, but it never comes together in quite the way it should. I think the main issue I have is pacing. Despite being a dialog driven character piece, the movie moves at break-neck speed and never gives the audience time to breathe or reflect on anything that happens. There are emotional bits that really need space to land, but don't because we're already onto the next.
