Jeepers Creepers takes a slow and more of a thrilling turn of the franchise. However that isn’t really a bad thing. It actually makes it stronger. Every scene containing The Creeper is thrilling, suspenseful, and clever and well performed by the actor who played him (not the director). The way The Creeper is introduced to the horror genre is a forever scary way with the truck and the horn. Even his layer is shown in a chilling moment with the main character Darry. Another strong point of the movie is the siblings Darry and Trish. They are well acted, written, and performed. Ok, maybe they do dumb choices but they do it for good intentions. The final scene at the police station is that’s worth the wait and and I can’t help but not blink when the scene starts. But the final scene of seeing the creeper at his new hideout with Darry having the back of his head cut open and his eyes taken out will forever be haunting and sad. Seeing the creeper look through the eye hole with Darrys eye is a great final shot.

This film is almost a classic for me. I remember chasing this film on the TV guide back in the day, too young to see it but too in awe of the portions I caught before my parents came back in the room. There is some fantastic stuff here, and regardless of your status as a horror fan new or old it does so much right with so much energy that you might as well watch it. You will get swept up in its paces--if ONLY you can get past its own overwhelming desire to be a new (and since failed) mascot for horror. As a standalone film (don't watch the sequels) Jeepers Creepers shucks off traditional conventions and makes the creature a weirdly charming character in its own right by the nature of how unrelenting yet playful it tends to be. There are scenes that soak in the dread--a simple filmic mechanism that I swear has been all but forgotten by hollywood--that make great effort to deliver on the viewer's expectations. The first 30 minutes of the film are its best, playing on fears of highway road tripping and elevated by some wonderful character acting by way of Justin Long and co-star (I am too lazy to check her name, but she plays a great foil). Once the film plays its cards, however, it becomes a bit of a mess. A very messy fun mess, but a mess nonetheless. Its fair to assume the director listened to the titular song the film takes its name after, envisioned a scene, and built the entire film around it--and thats okay. Its camp, its fun, its got some great little audience subversions that still work--but to say its uneven is an understatement. Thankfully, the monster is the best part. As long as you like your horror very much in your face, this one is for you. The initial shift into the visceral is executed brilliantly, but the moment doesnt keep by the end. Still, despite all the years seperated and the cheese wrapped around this spoiled mound of ground beef, that ending scene still has stuck with me. I really do think in the right hands the following movies could have made something special of the Creeper, but alas. Watch this one; don't waste your time on the sequels.

Not big into horror but I can’t get over the irrational actions of every human in this one. Monster design was okay but comical at times.
