The first half of this is really effective. James Wan does a great job building that creepy feeling that something is always lurking just outside the frame, and there are some genuinely great scares without needing much gore. Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson are both really good too, and Lin Shaye brings a lot of personality once Elise and her team get involved. The whole idea of The Further is also pretty interesting, and the sound design does a lot of work here. I do think it starts losing some of that atmosphere once it explains too much and turns into more of a straightforward supernatural adventure. The second half isn't nearly as creepy as the buildup, and some of the demons and ghost-hunting stuff gets a little silly. Still, the first half is strong enough to carry it, and there are several images and scares that really stick with you. A very solid horror movie with a few flaws, but definitely one of the better haunted-house films of its time.

Jumpscare fest with a nearly new premise that feels like Poltergeist mixed with doctor sleep. Obviously ended with a sequel in mind.

  • I have a real soft spot for Insidious. Supernatural horror is probably my favourite corner of the genre, and this is one of those films that proves you don’t need an enormous budget to make something unsettling. For me, though, the absolute queen of Insidious is Lin Shaye as Elise. She has this incredibly calm, reassuring presence where the second she walks into the room you automatically feel safer, which is quite an achievement considering she generally turns up specifically because something absolutely horrific is happening. Then you have Specs and Tucker alongside her providing just enough comic relief to stop the whole thing becoming relentlessly grim. The one thing I’ve never completely bought is the Lipstick-Face Demon. The idea is fantastic, but the makeup is… average at best. There’s a point where he looks slightly less ancient demonic evil and slightly more bloke backstage at a community theatre production. But considering how little money this movie was made for, I’m willing to give him a pass. Suspend your disbelief a little and the story around him absolutely works. As someone who suffers from sleep paralysis, the whole concept of being trapped between sleep, consciousness and something else hits a bit harder for me too. There are ideas in Insidious that are already uncomfortably close to things your brain can convince you are standing in the room at 3am, thank you very much. Lin Shaye also deserves enormous credit for what she did with Elise. She had already been working for decades by this point, but Insidious gave her the kind of horror role that became genuinely iconic, and she owns every second of it. With Insidious: Out of the Further bringing the franchise back into the spotlight, I’ve been rewatching the originals and this one still holds up remarkably well. I love low-budget horror because I love seeing filmmakers work out how to scare you without simply throwing money at the screen, and Insidious is a brilliant example of that. It doesn’t quite knock Hell House LLC off the top spot for me. I have an embarrassing weakness for found footage when it’s done properly, and good found footage can punch ridiculously far above its budget. But Insidious sits very comfortably just underneath it. Flawed demon makeup and all, I’ll happily keep going back into The Further.

Very solid, creepy first half; second half is very hit or miss, with more misses than hits.
